Recently, Kim Sonnen retired from her position as Senior Vice President, Payor Relations and Marketing,at Fresenius Medical Care North America. For the past year, Kim has been committed to building and leading the Fresenius Medical Care Foundation as our co-chair and remains very involved with the Foundation today. For our first “Why I Give” profile, we sat down with Kim to discuss her experience in the industry and how that drives her passion for our work.
Kim, we’d like to have a sense of your background. Can you please share your experience in the dialysis industry?
Prior to joining Fresenius Medical Care, I had worked at Gambro Healthcare and Renaissance Health, a renal disease management company. In 2003, I was fortunate to make the move to FMCNA as our VP of Managed Care and Marketing. I knew I’d found the right place. I was immediately impressed with the passion of our front-line care providers; it’s their genuine focus on our patients that inspired me to grow with the company.
Last year I told Bill that it was time for me to retire and he convinced me to stay on and lead the roll out and development of the Fresenius Medical Care Foundation. I feel privileged to have this incredible opportunity.
The Foundation has just announced its first initiative, what are you looking forward to in its evolution?
Given the announcement, and the conversations we have had with many nonprofit leaders, I’m really excited for the opportunities that exist in matching people in need of a kidney transplant to living donors. Our research showed that one of the most effective ways of generating awareness of kidney disease is though the story telling that happens when someone is in need of a kidney. I look forward to us sharing our message more broadly and growing our reach in tangible ways to our providers, employees and patients.
The focus of this column is “Why I Give”, can you please help us understand why you chose to make a donation to the Foundation?
I’ve been lucky to spend my entire career in this industry, have made lifelong friends and enjoyed many experiences along the way. I always go back to the connection I first made with our patients and caregivers. It’s deeply important to me that we do anything we can to support this community. Knowing that my donation will make a meaningful impact in someone’s life is why I donate.
The Foundation is grateful to Kim Sonnen and all of our donors. If you are interested in making a 2019 tax-deductible contribution, please click here to learn more.
